I have found a home for 2010

I’m happy to announce that I’ve signed a contract with the Kelly Benefit Strategies Pro Cycling Team for 2010.  I’m really excited about this opportunity, and I think the team will be a great place for me to grow as a rider.  I’m looking forward to contributing my efforts to the success of the team, and I know I have team mates whom I can trust.

Boulder Cup Report

RobODeaPhotography_web-8903

I made it through a tough weekend of racing in Boulder, CO, and I am now more than halfway through the 2009 cyclocross season.   It was really great to see some of my good friends out in Boulder.  Thanks especially to the Johnson family for their most welcoming hospitality.

Saturday’s Blue Sky Velo Cup at Xilinx took place a classic cyclocross course that contained a fluent combination of muddy, dry, fast and technical sections.  I got off to a good start, but had to back off a bit in the 2nd and 3rd laps as I tried to adapt to racing at altitude.  After settling into a rhythm I clawed my way back from around 10th place up to 6th, where I eventually finished.  I came really close to cracking the top 5 as I closed on Troy Wells in the final laps, but he held me off with a big charge all the way to the line.

On Sunday the course was dry and fast except for copious amounts of heavy sand sections.  We were able to ride a couple of the sections, but there were two sections where we had to run.  One of the running sections was really long, and that took a big toll on the lungs at altitude.

I got off to a great start, and rode near the front for the first 2 laps.  At the end of the 2nd lap I crashed hard in one of the sand pits.   Usually I can bounce right back up from a spill, but I was on the ground for a few seconds trying to collect myself.  I lost about 5 places just from the crash, and then throughout the next lap I fell back as I tried to find my rhythm again.  In the crash I sustained a sharp impact on my left knee and pulled a muscle in my upper thigh.  The muscle didn’t affect me too much while on the bike, but it caused a sharp pain every step when I was running.  Since there was about 1 minute of running per lap, that slowed me down quite a bit.

I dropped back to around 20th place, but then I settled in and started to pick a few guys off.  I felt better as the race went on, and I managed to close in a few places in the final lap.  After the crash I felt I rode the best race I could, and I managed to finish 16th in the end.

I’m still undecided about racing in Northampton this weekend.  It would be really fun to race in New England again, but I’m not sure if it will work out.   The next event I’m locked in for is the USGP Mercer Cup on November 14-15.   That will be an exciting weekend for sure.
